Church Textiles by Heather Marshall

I am an artist who makes work from textiles using stitch as an expressive medium. I have experience of working with clergy to create unique stoles and altar cloths as well as vestments and large-scale textile pieces for private and public spaces.

Since graduating from the University of Central England with an MA in surface pattern I have been working in the creative industry producing one-off commissions for schools and other public buildings. Examples of my commissioned work can be seen in Birmingham, Chelmsford and Gloucestershire. I have also exhibited my smaller textile work nationally.

My work is made by layering different textural fabrics over each other and then adding machine embroidery to create expressively colourful textile panels. Through my work I explore spiritual themes, colour relationships, combinations and associations to create different feelings, moods and emotions and even an idea of a time or place.

I draw inspiration from the natural world and its changing colours throughout the seasons. I am also influenced by other artists with a strong colour sense in their work such as Patrick Heron, Mark Rothko, Henri Matisse and Paul Klee.

I am available for commissions of site-specific textiles and items of clerical clothing and would be happy to offer design consultation to ensure that each piece is unique, personal and individual.
